CourtTV and "Viral Marketing"

CourtTV is using a technique known as "viral marketing", attempting to spread knowledge of their programs of interest via word-of-mouth and public means rather than traditional advertising media.

What does this mean to us? Spam. CourtTV has hired people to spam public forums.

All over the internet, CourtTV spammers
have
infested public bulletin boards, making one or two posts identical to hundreds if not thousands of others posted elsewhere before vanishing.

Google shows over 3,000 hits for one well-abused username alone, 'kiyoung80'. This is pure spam, and for once, the culprit is obvious -- CourtTV!

Just because these services are there to abuse does not mean that public online discussion forums are CourtTV's personal advertising megaphone. I will never financially support CourtTV in any way until their spamming stops, and I hope you will do likewise.

Can't you just put that person on ignore, then never see the "spam"? Surely the other boards you refer to, have that feature. Court TV is the only station covering the Peterson trial, all day. So I would expect it to be brought up on many message boards.

No, we can't. It's a game of whack-a-mole; every time we block one, another comes along, and ignoring it won't make it go away. It's just like email spam, except not as bad, yet; forums are still usable.

But spam has made usenet useless for a long time now, and bulletin boards might be going the same way if we don't try and stop it. It would be easy to ignore it, but for once, we can deal with it -- there is a clear culprit, CourtTV.

Lastly, even if we could ignore CourtTV's flagrant abuse of the online community, why should we?

It seems to me that the fact that spam can be ignored does not justify an intentional spamming campaign on the part of CourtTV. After all, the rules of CourtTV's own board prohibit the very same behavior currently being inflicted on other forums:

quote:
Please refrain from using your Court TV message board and/or chat sessions for the following:

-Using the free message boards and/or chat service for commercial purposes, including, but not limited to the following:
a. Offering for sale any products or services;
b. Soliciting for advertisers and sponsors;

The question for me, then, is who exactly is responsible for this thin slice of netiquette violating heaven? Is it the product of feverish minds in the CourtTV marketing department? Is it the brainchild of contracted advertisers who ran it up the proverbial flagpole and found that even one-fingered salutes contained revenue potential?

IOW, what does CourtTV know and when did it know it?

Take a look at the posts I have linked to. It's not that they are on similar topics linking to CourtTV -- they are frequently identical letter-for-letter and username-for-username. I found them all just with a google search for kiyoung80. It's the bulletin-board equivalent of a mass mailing.

The marketing technique to which you refer is best utilized when subtlety is employed. Otherwise the reaction elicited is one of disdain rather than interest.

Thing is:

1. There's a gun.
2. It's smoking.
3. There's a live person and a dead body.

But nothing ties the person to smoking gun or the dead body.

Unless one can show that the person(s) bombing message boards about the Peterson case is somehow in the employ of Court TV, there's no compelling reason to convict, or even indict Court TV for that person's actions.

Read the Peterson board here. For every sensible person that's posted, 10 whackos have come out of the woodwork. That one or more people might be obsessive enough to post his or her thoughts on 1,000 different message boards doesn't surprise me.

Everyone with a television knows about this case. And everyone who cares enough about it knows where they can watch all Scott all the time: CourtTV.

Have to no-bill this one. The defendant is free to go pending more compelling evidence.
