Did you run ballistics yet?

It seems to me that if you believe CTV is spamming on those boards, the thing to do would be to respond to the particular posts by the particular nics that you believe are doing so--ON THOSE BOARDS. Point the problem out there, so that the credibility is lost on those forums.

I guess I just don't see the logic in signing on to CTV to nag the posters here about it. I mean, we didn't do it!

As always, JMO.

Unless one can show that the person(s) bombing message boards about the Peterson case is somehow in the employ of Court TV, there's no compelling reason to convict, or even indict Court TV for that person's actions.

Read the Peterson board here. For every sensible person that's posted, 10 whackos have come out of the woodwork. That one or more people might be obsessive enough to post his or her thoughts on 1,000 different message boards doesn't surprise me.

It does suprise me. I consider it unlikely that one person could do so much damage, I doubt this is a lone crank.

I also doubt it's a lone crank for other reasons. Have you read the posts I linked to? They're frequently identical letter-by-letter. You'd think someone with that much personal motiviation would be a bit more, well, personal.

We're not talking about television. We're talking about the internet. I don't buy for a minute that CourtTV's the only place on the internet with information on the peterson case.

I wrote: "all Scott all the time." CourtTV's the only outlet I'm aware of with continuous Peterson coverage.

And, actually we ARE talking about TV -- if Court TV is behind this, they are doing to do up their TV ratings.

Have to no-bill this one. The defendant is free to go pending more compelling evidence.

But it wasn't just the Peterson case, though.

There are promotions going on right now:

Do a Google search on "stupidest criminal" matt81 to see it ongoing, or on "mortifying mug shots" or on the username bboyblu. This is just stuff from the past week or so, too, and it's all the same pattern: Users who register for unrelated discussion boards en masse in order to post about some upcoming program on Court TV.

I find it difficult to imagine that this is just a series of unauthorized frolics by people who are obsessed with programming on Court TV that hasn't even aired yet.

This is frequently done, but again, it's a game of whack-a-mole, and I don't have the time or energy to track down and deal with every one of these posts on forums well outside my areas of interest.

Neither do these spamming posters ever come back to read responses, so that is futile. I've seen the same username on dozens of boards, never with more than 3 posts, never replying to anything anyone actually said.

( That's another point in favor of a spammer over an anonymous crank -- why would anyone that interested in the subject ask people's opinions then vanish, time after time? )

The problem isn't that these posts have credibility, they don't. The problem is that they're uninvited spam, by all appearances commercial spam, that wastes resources and time.

Absolutely. The point is to get the word out, so people will be more watchful for these things, and hold CourtTV accountable if they are convinced it's responsible. And where would I find more people interested in CourtTV's doings than the CourtTV forums?

But I am not a spammer. I will obey the rules here. I will use things I control like my livejournal and webpage, I will use CourtTV's feedback channels such as it's forums and it's snail-mail address, I will inform my cable company why I do not wish it to carry CourtTV and why, and I will ask friends of mine to do the same.

Hmmmmmmm I did. And THAT, is rather suspicious.

I might've spoken too soon . . . the circumstantial evidence is mounting.

corona688, thanks for your organized response...

Good luck with your efforts here, I mean that sincerely.

Unfortunately, whatever litigation that will ultimately shut down such viral advertisers will probably also stop all of us "local yokels" from sharing our ideas of products. Yesterday there was a thread I found very heartwarming, in which someone couldn't find a toy for her child--multiple posters did web searches until someone found a place with the toy in stock... A real joy to see people helping each other out, but I'm sure that type of request/response will have to be outlawed under any laws preventing viral advertisers from doing so. A shame for everyone, really, to see the life sucked out of the internet that way!
